Introduction (SSAT 시험에 대해서):SSAT는 Secondary School Admission Test의 줄임말(Acronomy)로 학생이 명문 초등학교 혹은 중학교 혹은 중학교에 입학하기 위해 제출하는 학습능력을 측정하는 일종의 수학능력(수능) 시험입니다. 예전에는 고등학교 입시에서도 필수 제출 점수였고 지금도 많은 학교에서 입학을 위해서 점수를 요구하고 있으나, 학생들의 학습능력의 향상과 증가하는 인기와 경쟁률 덕분에 현실적으로 명문고등학교 (very competitive boarding schools or STEM schools) 입학에서는 SAT 시험점수를 요구하는 곳이 늘어나고 있습니다. 일부 학교에서는 입학의 평이성을 위해 MAP 시험이나 학교 자체입학시험을 통해 학생들의 입학을 허용하고 있습니다. 하지만 명문 보딩스쿨인 중학교 혹은 초등학교 혹은 중학교에 입학하기 위해서는 전통적으로 SSAT시험을 요구하고 있습니다. 다시말씀드리면 미국 명문고등학교(미국 명문과학고)에서는 SAT시험점수를 그리고 중학교 혹은 초등학교 혹은 중학교에 입학하기 위해서는 SSAT시험점수를 요구합니다. 그렇지 않는 경우 혹은 학교 자체 재량에 따라 학교자체시험 또는 MAP 시험 점수를 요구하는 경우도 있습니다. Start SSAT! (언제 공부를 시작할까요?): 초등학교 혹은 중학교 학생인 경우 문학,과학지문 그리고 사회과학및 역사지문을 통해 독해능력을 향상시킬 필요와 함께 수학과 과학분야의 수준항샹과 에세이 작문능력을 높이기 위해서 저학년인 3학년부터 노출시키는 것이 좋다. 보통 Elementary Level인 경우는 3학년과 4학년들에게 적합하며 Middle Level인경우는 5학년 혹은 6학년에게 그리고 상위수준인 Upper Level인 경우는 7학년 및 8학년들이 적합합니다. 이해력이 빠른 학생들은 보통 3-4학년때 Elementary를 시작으로 Upper Level를 8학년 이전에 끝내거나 99%이상의 점수를 확보하여 좋은학교로의 진학을 준비하는 경우도 있습니다. 언제부터 시작하는가 보다는 일단 학생의 영어실력과 수학(Math)실력이 어느 정도인지를 미리 파악해야겠고 어느 정도의 단어실력을 익힌후 SSAT에 노출시키면 좋습니다.

Why SSAT? Levels in SSAT (학년별 수준): Lower Level 혹은 현재 통용되고 있는 Elementary Level은 초등학교 3학년-4학년 학생등에게 적합한 시험입니다. 반면에 Middle Level은 5학년에서 7학년 학생들이 그리고 Upper Level은 8학년에서 11학년의 학생들이 응시하는 시험이라고 SSAT.org 홈페이지에 명시되어 있습니다. 그러나 21년 동안 SAT를 지도하면서 9학년때 SAT를 시작하거나 끝내는 학생 (또는 9학년때 SAT 만점 기록)들을 경험해본 시점에서 11학년이 SSAT를 준비한다는 것은 조금은 납득하기 힘듭니다. 학생의 학습능력을 향상시키기 위해서는 적어도 3학년 겨울방학때부터는 Elemenary 및 Middle Level을 시작하는 편이 좋고 꾸준히 공부하면서 Upper Level을 8학년 이전 혹은 7학년 이전에 마무리 지어 SAT로의 연계를 이끌어내면 당연히 Exeter, Andover등의 명문보딩스쿨로의 진학과 더불어 MIT, HARVARD, PRINCETON, STANFORD등의 미국 최상위권 대학으로의 진학등의 좋은 성과를 낼수 있습니다.

What's on? (시험 시간및 구성): 시험은 총 3시간5분에 걸쳐 진행되며 각 섹션별로는 작문시험인 Writing Sample 25분 (SSAT 점수에는 포함되지 않으며 중고등학교 입학담당자에게 제출용), 수학시험인 Quantitative 30분 (section 1), 독해분야인 Reading섹션(section 2)에서 40분 그리고 단어활용능력시험인 Verbal Section (section 3)에서 30분 그리고 다시 Quantitative 섹션 (section 4)에서 30분 그리고 Experimental Section (section 5)으로 15분의 시간이 소요됩니다. 휴식시간은 각각 5분으로 Writing Sample 시험후 그리고 Reading Section 시험후에 있습니다. 시험장소: 미국및 캐나다에서는 시험을 응시하는 방법은 집에서 computer로 SSAT시험을 치루는 방법과 Prometric Test Center로 직접 방문하여 시험을 응시하는 경우 그리고 Paper-based 종이시험을 특정장소에서 학생이 원하는 날짜(flex dates)중에 선택해서 시험을 응시하는 경우 (*Flex Test는 일년에 단 한번만 응시할 수 있으며 같은 일년안에 추가 시험에 대해서는 지정된 날짜에 시험을 치뤄야한다)등 총 3가지 방법을 제공하고 있습니다.

01 Elementary Level

SSAT 점수는 3 영역으로 세분화되며 Verbal(단어)영역과 Quantitative/math 영역 그리고 Reading 독해영역 점수가 각각 명시됩니다. 또한 세 영역의 통합점수도 명시됩니다.
부분별 혹은 영역별 가장 낮은 점수는 300점이며 가장 높은 점수는 600점입니다. 총합은 최저 900점에서 최고 1800점까지 정해져 있습니다.

02 Middle Level

SSAT 점수는 3 영역으로 세분화되며 Verbal(단어)영역과 Quantitative/math 영역 그리고 Reading 독해영역 점수가 각각 명시됩니다. 또한 세 영역의 통합점수도 명시됩니다.
부분별 혹은 영역별 가장 낮은 점수는 440점이며 가장 높은 점수는 770점입니다. 총합은 최저 1320점에서 최고 2310점까지 정해져 있습니다.

03 Upper Level

SSAT 점수는 3 영역으로 세분화되며 Verbal(단어)영역과 Quantitative/math 영역 그리고 Reading 독해영역 점수가 각각 명시됩니다. 또한 세 영역의 통합점수도 명시됩니다.

30개의 동의어 문제 (30 synonym questions)와 유추어문제 (30 analogy questions)로 객관식형식의 5지선다형으로 총 60문항으로 구성되어 있습니다.

The verbal section of the test consists of 30 synonym questions and 30 analogy questions. The synonym portion measures verbal ability. The analogy portion measures a student’s proficiency in identifying logical relationships between words and concepts.

The verbal section is not intended to be a test of vocabulary only, and therefore includes common words that are expected to be familiar to the average SSAT test taker.

Both types of verbal items—synonyms and analogies—are carefully balanced to avoid advantage or disadvantage to students whose interests and backgrounds may have led them to read more or acquire a large vocabulary in specific areas

The questions are designed to measure understanding of mathematical concepts, computation, routine mathematical manipulations, and problem solving, as well as some recall of basic nomenclature and rules.

The test items vary in difficulty and measure different levels of understanding. Depending upon the student’s experiences in school, some concepts may be unfamiliar.

SSAT Reading 독해영역은 총 40문제로 구성되어 있으며 독해지문은 인문학, 사회학, 과학관련 문제들이 출제됩니다.

The reading comprehension section consists of 40 questions based on reading passages that generally fall into the categories of narrative (literary fiction, novels, short stories, poems) and argument (the presentation of an obvious and definite point of view on some subject, such as essays). The subject matter of the reading passages is drawn from the following general fields: humanities (such as art, biography, and poetry), social studies (such as history, economics, and sociology), and science (such as medicine, astronomy, and anthropology). The passages cover a variety of sources and subject areas so that examinees will not be at an advantage or disadvantage as a result of encountering material related to an area with which they may or may not be familiar. The passages vary in length, but are typically 100 to 350 words.

SSAT Writing 에세이영역은 점수채점에 포함되지 않지만, 입학 담당자에게 제출하는 시험입니다.

The SSAT includes an unscored writing sample that is sent to schools with the student’s score report. The Middle Level exam includes two creative prompts, from which the student will choose one. The Upper Level writing section presents two prompts: one creative and one essay, from which the student will choose one. All students have 25 minutes to complete the writing portion of the exam. The writing sample can be up to two pages long.
