Are you a high school student exploring careers in science and the medical field? Are you interesting in becoming a pharmacist? Are you looking for advice and tips for pharmacy students? Just needing insight on how to choose a career path? Here are some tips for students pursuing a career in pharmacy.
Pharmacist Career Tip #1: Attend pharmacy camp.

If you are in high school, a fantastic way to gain exposure is to attend a pharmacy camp. You'll participate in fun activities, take classes, meet other aspiring pharmacists and more. Unfortunately, these programs do cost money (plus the expense to get to the camp), so not everyone can afford to go. But, if you have a generous grandmother, or other means to pay for it, you should definitely consider it. For a list of some pharmacy camps, please read "Pharmacy Camps: Camps for Students Interested in a Pharmacy Career." Apply as early as possible.

Pharmacist Career Tip #2: Find a job shadow experience.

A job shadow day with a reputable pharmacy would be a valuable experience. You'll learn more about what pharmacists do, and get your feet wet in the career. For advice on landing a job shadow opportunity, please read, "How to Find a Job Shadow Experience." If you are blessed to find one, don't forget to write a thank-you note. Read "Sample Job Shadow Thank-You Letters" for some tips.

Pharmacist Career Tip #3: Volunteer in a hospital pharmacy.

If you have the time, it's great to gain some volunteer experience. Many hospital pharmacies will allow student volunteers. You might still need to go through an interview, submit a resume, etc. Call your local hospital, and ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator to see if they permit volunteers in the pharmacy.

If you cannot volunteer in a pharmacy, it's still wise to do some volunteering, whether at a hospital or elsewhere. For advice on finding volunteer jobs, please read "Where to Find Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students."

Pharmacist Career Tip #4: Join online forums for pharmacy students.

A fourth tip is to join online message boards for pharmacy and pre-pharmacy students. One great one to try is the pre-pharmacy section at the Student Doctor Network here. You can ask for advice on everything from studying to managing student debt. You might even meet some of your future colleagues online.

Pharmacist Career Tip #5: Start preparing for the PCAT now.

It is definitely not too early to start studying for the PCAT. I recommend investing in books and software to help you prepare. You might even form a study group with other pre-pharmacy students. You can meet in a coffee shop, library or wherever to help each other with mastering facts and sample questions.

Pharmacist Career Tip #6: Make it a priority to get good grades in all of your pre-pharmacy classes.

Your grades do matter and can affect which pharmacy school you'll attend, or even if you get accepted in the first place. Put your grades first before extracurricular activities. If you are having a difficult time in a certain class, consider hiring a tutor. To help your prepare for your future classes, you might buy the textbooks in advance and read through them when you have the time. (While the textbook might change, reading it definitely won't hurt.)

If a part-time job will affect your studies, then consider not working, if possible. (You might consider some work-at-home opportunities. Read "Part-Time Job During Medical/Pharmacy School: Freelance Writing" for advice on earning income through writing articles. You might also take a look at "Legitimate and Scam-Free Work at Home Jobs."

Pharmacist Career Tip #7: Have a life outside of school.

Keeping tip #7 in mind, it is still important to have a life outside of school. Join a church and participate in occasional college-aged activities. Take aerobics classes or Yoga. Hang out with friends at a coffee shop occasionally. Consider joining a service club or sorority/fraternity. Having a social life outside of school can make a tremendous difference in your overall well-being.

These are just seven helpful tips for future pharmacy students. Good luck with your future endeavors!
